Updates & channels
Stable and beta release channels, the startup update check, self-update with gray update, and landing a new build in a running session with /restart.
Source: crates/gray/src/update.rs
| Channel | What it tracks |
|---|---|
| stable | tagged releases — the default |
| beta | rebuilt on every push to main |
On macOS and Linux Gray checks for a newer build on startup (cached for 24 hours) and tells you when one exists. Updating re-runs the installer for the channel you are on.
bash
$gray update # alias: gray upgrade$/update # same, from inside the REPL$/restart # restart the gateway, then re-exec this session on the new build
/update and /restart are the two halves of landing a build: the first puts it on disk, the second moves the running gateway and your current session onto it without losing the conversation.
| Variable | Effect |
|---|---|
| GRAY_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 | never check on startup |
| GRAY_AUTO_UPDATE=1 | self-update in the background — stable channel only, since beta changes on every commit |
