The Gray REPL: the composer, slash-command completion, keyboard shortcuts, clipboard paste, the Ctrl-C policy and what the footer is telling you.
Source: crates/gray/src/composer
Running gray with no arguments opens the REPL. The transcript scrolls in your terminal's normal history; the composer — input box, status line and footer — stays pinned to the bottom rows of the screen. Nothing takes over the alternate screen, so your scrollback stays yours.
Keys
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| Enter | send; on an empty prompt after an interrupt or error, continue the last turn |
| Shift+Enter · Alt+Enter · Ctrl-J | new line |
| Tab | insert the highlighted completion for editing |
| Ctrl-V | paste from the clipboard — an image first, text otherwise |
| Ctrl-C · Esc | cancel the running turn |
| Ctrl-C at the prompt | clear the draft; a second press on an empty prompt within 5 s exits |
| Ctrl-D | exit, on an empty line |
Slash commands
Type / and the command list appears. Completion knows arguments too: /context r suggests reserve, /skills lists your skills, /model lists cached model ids. Enter completes and fires; Tab inserts so you can keep typing. The full list is in Slash commands.
The footer
- —Model, context usage and session cost, updated as the turn streams.
- —
◷ 4m— the provider's prompt cache is warm for about four more idle minutes. It hides once the cache is cold. - —A transcript warning such as “Cache miss after 6m idle: 45.2k tokens re-billed” when a request paid for prompt tokens the previous one should have cached.
Handy commands
