Getting started

Installation

Install the Gray AI agent harness with one curl command on macOS, Linux or WSL, a digest-verified artifact on Windows 11, or build it from source.

Source: dist/install.sh

Gray ships as a single statically linked binary. The installer detects your platform, downloads the matching tarball from gray.alignment.id/dl, and drops the binary on your PATH. There is no runtime to install and nothing to configure at install time.

macOS · Linux · WSL

$curl -fsSL https://gray.alignment.id/install.sh | sh

The beta channel rebuilds on every push to main. Use it if you want the newest fixes and can tolerate the occasional rough edge.

$curl -fsSL https://gray.alignment.id/install.sh | sh -s -- beta

Windows 11

Gray runs natively on Windows 11 x64: no WSL, no Linux distro, no elevation. Git for Windows supplies the shell for tool calls; Gray does not install it. There is no one-liner here — install.ps1 dispatches to install-native.ps1, and only the release artifact carries both. Take the windows-native-preview artifact of a successful Windows CI run (it holds the payload zip, its .sha256, and both scripts under dist), keep the dist folder beside the payload, inspect the scripts, then run:

$hash = ((Get-Content .\gray-beta-x86_64-windows.zip.sha256).Trim() -split '\s+')[0]
.\dist\install.ps1 -ArchivePath .\gray-beta-x86_64-windows.zip -Sha256 $hash

Pass -Wsl for the compatibility route that installs the Linux build inside WSL; native installs never fall back to it. Artifacts are unsigned, so the digest catches corruption, not publisher identity. Self-update, the gateway and cron execution are not supported on native Windows.

From source

$cargo build --release -p gray
