Gray vs Claude Code: which should you use?
Last updated
Short answer
Choose Claude Code if you want a polished, purpose-built terminal coding agent and Anthropic's proprietary tool and plans suit you. Choose Gray if you want a minimal open-source (MIT) harness you run yourself — one static binary, any OpenAI-compatible provider or a local model — and accept a more do-it-yourself coding setup.
| Gray | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Minimal, always-on AI harness: one Rust binary, open source (MIT) | Anthropic's proprietary agentic coding tool for the terminal |
| Coding focus | General-purpose agent: it edits and writes code through bash plus the plugins and skills you add | Purpose-built for software work: multi-file edits, tests, Git workflows and code review |
| Install | One install command; a single static binary, no runtime dependencies | Native installer or npm package |
| Models | Any OpenAI-compatible provider with your own API key; local models through Ollama; Claude Pro/Max and ChatGPT plans through official plugins | Claude models, through a Claude plan or Anthropic API billing |
| Runs 24/7 | Yes — the gateway runs Gray as a user service, with cron and app connections | Built for interactive sessions; a headless mode covers scripts and CI |
| Extends with | Plugins and skills; MCP servers through the official plugin | Skills, subagents, hooks and MCP servers built in |
| Security model | Runs the model's shell commands with your user's privileges; no sandbox or approval prompt by default. The official permissions plugin adds approvals | Permission modes gate tool calls, with approval prompts and managed settings for teams |
| Price | Free (MIT); you pay your model provider. Hosted Voyager plan $77/month, not yet open | Included with Claude plans or billed per token through the Anthropic API |
Is Gray a good alternative to Claude Code?
As a dedicated coding tool, no: Claude Code is the more specialized product. Gray is a good alternative if your priority is a small MIT binary, any model provider — including a Claude Pro/Max plan through a plugin — and an always-on agent you extend yourself.
Can Gray use my Claude subscription?
Yes. Gray works with any OpenAI-compatible provider using your own API key, and official plugins let Gray run on a Claude Pro/Max or ChatGPT plan instead of an API key; see Providers & models.
Is Gray safer than Claude Code?
Not by default. Claude Code gates tool calls behind permission modes; Gray runs the model's shell commands with your user's privileges and no approval prompt unless you add the official permissions plugin, so run it isolated for untrusted work — see Safety.
When should you choose Claude Code instead?
Choose Claude Code if you spend most of your time shipping code, want a supported, purpose-built agent with built-in Git and review workflows, and don't mind a proprietary tool tied to Claude models.
