What is an AI agent harness?

An AI agent harness is the software that wraps a language model and turns it into a working agent: it runs the loop, calls tools, stores memory, and schedules tasks. The model is the brain; the harness is everything that lets it act.
What does an agent harness do?
- —Runs the agent loop: send the conversation to the model, run the tool calls it asks for, feed the results back, and repeat until the task is done.
- —Gives the model tools: a shell, file editing, web search, or anything a plugin adds.
- —Keeps sessions, so a conversation can be resumed later.
- —Manages the context window, summarizing older turns before the model runs out of room.
- —Remembers things across sessions.
- —Runs work on a schedule or in the background, so the agent keeps going when you're not watching.
Harness vs model vs framework
| What it is | Examples | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | The language model that reads and writes text | Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6 Astra |
| Harness | A ready-to-run program that turns a model into an agent | Gray, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent |
| Framework | A library you write code against to build your own agent | LangChain, LangGraph |
You can swap the model under a harness without changing how you use it. A framework gives you building blocks; a harness gives you an agent you can run today.
How Gray approaches it
Gray is a minimal harness: one Rust binary with bash as its only default tool. Sessions are JSONL files you can resume, the context window compacts itself before it fills up, and memory, skills, cron jobs and messaging apps like Discord are small built-in surfaces or plugins you choose.
How do you choose an AI agent harness?
- —Footprint: how much RAM and CPU it needs to stay on. Our benchmark compares six harnesses.
- —Setup: how many steps and config files stand between install and a first reply.
- —Models: whether it works with the provider you already use, or with local models.
- —Safety: what it can do on your machine without asking, and whether you can sandbox it.
- —Channels: where you can talk to it, such as a terminal, Discord, Slack or Telegram.
