OpenClaw alternatives for people who want something simple

OpenClaw has about 392,000 GitHub stars and more than 20 messaging integrations. That breadth is the point, but it also means more to set up and more to secure: a critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-28466) was disclosed in March 2026, and researchers found tens of thousands of instances exposed to the internet. If you want an agent that just runs, here are simpler options.

What does simple mean here?

  • —Few moving parts: one program, not a stack of services.
  • —A short path from install to a first reply.
  • —Little configuration for a basic always-on agent.
  • —A small enough footprint for a cheap server.

Gray

Gray is a minimal, always-on AI harness: one Rust binary installed with one command, bash as its only default tool, and everything else added as a plugin or a skill. A basic always-on agent takes [x] lines of config, and Gray idles at [x] MB in our benchmark. It works with any OpenAI-compatible provider and is free and open source (MIT).

ZeroClaw

ZeroClaw is also a single Rust binary, dual-licensed MIT or Apache-2.0. By default it runs with supervised autonomy: medium-risk actions need your approval and high-risk ones are blocked.

nanobot

nanobot from HKUDS is an ultra-lightweight Python agent framework under the MIT license, a good fit if you'd rather read and change Python than run a binary.

PicoClaw

PicoClaw from Sipeed is a single Go binary built for $10-class boards, from RISC-V to Raspberry Pi; its README reports 10–20 MB of RAM for recent builds. It's still pre-1.0, and the project advises against production use before then.

NanoClaw

NanoClaw is open source (MIT) and runs each agent in its own container: a little more setup, in exchange for isolation.

Or skip self-hosting

If you'd rather not run anything, hosted agents like OpenAI Dots (included with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium) and xAI's Grok Bot (on eligible SuperGrok and Cursor plans) run on the vendor's cloud. You trade control for zero setup.
